I represent "Place To Escape" magazine

PTS Table of contents

Once again, I was able to create my templates and final products with the windows application indesign. The planning of my table of contents was over the course of roughly 2 months. I included my brainstorm for my table of contents , to further elaborate on the meaning I wanted to create for my magazine.  The design of my table of contents was simple and straight to the point. I wanted to avoid a convoluted formatting for my table of contents because I find extra information unnecessary and too distracting for readers. Moreover, my target audience are fellow adventurous travelers, and from my personal experience these types of travelers aren't ones to over analyze magazines. They just want it short and sweet so they can move onto their next endeavor! So I made my table of contents straight to the point and made sure to focus the attention on the photos featured rather than the text. My general focus throughout my creative process was on the photos to portray the beautiful lands...

PTS Table of contents

The table of contents for "Place To Escape" was my last edition to the magazine's creation. With my front cover and my spread I implemented a simple house style, I also continued this theme onto table of contents. In order to catch my audiences attention I needed to have titles for my articles that allured readers to flipping onto the article page. In order to achieve this I searched for  tips  on creating successful article titles. As a result, I was able to put together titles for articles featured in "Place to Escape." Including: Enter the Golden Gates Longs peak Bolder, Colorado? Or Boulder, Colorado? Surfing Paradise Forest Kings El Capitan The Rockies Kingdom Trek of a lifetime Biking and Hiking? Let's do it City of the Stars  I drew inspiration from magazines that had a simple one page table of content spread and included photos in about half of the spread. I used this concept in my feature spread, with half of the page having photos and...

PTS feature spread content process

Choosing an article topic for the two page feature was somewhat challenging. I had minimal word count for each article, being that it was a half a page of text for one article. However, to narrow my searches down I decided to touch upon the National parks I photographed and I they can offer its visitors. But specific to my magazine, I made sure to focus on adventurous and outdoorsy activities because my target audience are adventurous travelers and nature goers. I began searching for puns and slogans for the Rocky mountain national park. I found "Rockies Empire" and instantly pictured it as my article title. However, in order not to fall into copyright issues, I created the title "The Rockies Kingdom." I took a shot on Long's peak in the park and thought of it as the "king" of the rockies so I decided to adopt this as my title for the Colorado portion of the layout. Below the "Long's peak" photo:  As for the California portion...

PTS feature spread creative process

For the creation of my feature spread I, first wanted to include a spread with only one article throughout the two page spread and was torn between a Colorado or California article. However, I then realized that I was replicating the format of several travel spreads I had researched and failed to put my own spin to it. As a result, I brainstormed the format of two separate mini articles on my two page spread (previous brainstorming mentioned in blog post "PTS spread and table of contents brainstorm layout" went into the construction of this formatting below) :   The photos about each article will be in relation to the article below it. Therefore making each page separate articles, on the nature spot I deemed suiting for Colorado and the other for California.   For the photos featured above the articles, I had taken panoramic shots and I wanted to include one in the spread. Specifically for Yosemite because of the blue hues and purple hues that I was able to cap...

Place to Escape magazine front cover layout process

For the layout of my front cover I had draw inspiration from several covers. Most of these covers have minimal text and the attention is given to the photo featured, I wanted to replicate this concept. The "AFAR" magazine for example, the main cover line is placed in the gap of the canyon. The purpose of this is to focus the front cover on the featured photo rather than the text. I also saw this concept in the "travel" magazine featuring the Greek islands and the "budget travel" magazine. Therefore, I placed the masthead, main cover line, and cover lines in accommodation to the photo so that instead of interrupting the photo, it blended with it. I did this with intentions to focus on the beauty of nature rather than the text.

Place to Escape magazine front cover process

For my magazine I enhanced the lighting of my featured photo so that the bark and canopy of the tree is more detailed and visible. I also added a red tint on photo shop in order to enhance the color of the red woods' bark. The location of this photo was in Sequoia National park. I choose this location because it is one of California's national parks, I deemed this appropriate because my target audience is adventurous travelers and nature goers. When I took the photo of the towering trees, I decided on a high angle shot in order to grasp the height them. The viewer then feels how nature prevails the power of humans as it towers above and continues to do so for more hundreds of years. The high angle creates a sense of superiority, which I felt and wanted to replicate in the shot. Furthermore, I decided on a close up shot of the canopies to rely how close humans actually are to nature. We tend to view nature as something strange and unknown, fearing how vulnerable we are to it b...

PTS spread and table of contents brainstorm layout

There are several spreads I have come across in my brainstorming for my travel magazine. Below I have included two-page sheet spreads from travel magazines that I will use as a means of guidance. In general, I want my magazine's to focus to be on the beauty of the photos. Therefore,  intend on having a layout where the images are the majority of content. The layout of the spreads above,  feature photos on the upper half and text on the bottom half. The use of this layout allows for the inclusion of multiple photos. I want to present the beauty of nature and create a sense of appreciation among readers as they survey my magazine. Therefore, by the ability to have multiple photos on the spread, it allows for readers to see a sense of the atmosphere of the nature spots I include. What I also find appealing about this layout is that it is simple. For my front cover I also want this look, so this format is perfect to continue the house style of simplicity. I intend o...

PTS magazine front cover brainstorm

This magazine will be a travel magazine, for the purpose of showcasing natures beauty. For my magazine I decided that a simple front cover is most appropriate for the image I want to portray in my magazine: the beauty of travel, specifically the scenery displayed. I drew inspiration from several magazine covers:

PTS photo selection

The photos I will include in my magazine are from a trip I endeavored during my winter holidays. My family and I traveled to California and Colorado, where I was granted the opportunity to photograph the beauty of both of these states. In class, we already had selected our genre of magazine. I choose travel because of my experiences and because I knew that I was going to travel during the winter break. I photographed in Yosemite National park (California) , Sequoia National park(Colorado), and the Rocky Mountain National park. This took place over the course of a week. Below I included photos I took in these national parks. Colorado:       California:

PTS photoshoot planning

I plan on photographing on my winter trip to Colorado and California. I intend on photographing in the national park I will be visiting. These parks include: Estes park, Rocky mountain national park, and Yosemite National park. I love natures creations and landscapes especially mountainous ones, and these park will be perfect for what I have in mind. I especially love trees, and sequoias (redwoods) are one of the tallest trees in the world. I hope to capture the perfect shot of these beauties to make one of the photos my front cover. I will also visit Long's peak which has high elevation where I will be able to take a panorama of the Rocky Mountains if weather permits. In Yosemite national park there is a large granite rock "el capitan" which I would like to include as one of my spread features. I hope to capture a shot of this work of art. With the photos I take I intend on capturing the beauty and antiquity of the landscapes. I want to be able to portray the beaut...

5280 magazine analysis (target audience research)

The magazine 5280 is a Denver,  colorado  based magazine. The title’s originated from the “city’s mile-high elevation.” The magazine was created in 1993 to serve as the city’s magazine. They determined their content from surveying residents of Denver about what they would like to see in a magazine based on their city. This was the stem of what the magazine was all about. The surveys showed residents were interested in content from: “the arts to the environment, and from fitness to historical articles on Denver and the West.” From then to now, they expanded their magazine further and created a website for it. Now, the magazine target is worldwide, the website shows views from the united states to Columbia to Germany to Canada to the UK. The magazine still provides content that was once featured decades ago. Dining  experiences , outdoor activities,  special  events, etc. are some of the things still seen in every  edition  published from the magazine. M...

The identity of the magazine is a travel magazine featuring the beauty of  colorado’s  outdoors and the environment in  colorado . T his is seen by the photos featured on the front of the  magazine. T he  magazine also includes significant events  upcoming in  colorado  or that have already occurred.  Content found in the magazine includes: ways to minimize carbon footprints, a newly opened building that serves as a meeting for non-profit organizations, and a trail that has finally been reopened after years of being off limits. 5280 magazine analysis (spread analysis)

The spread for the magazine of these 3 editions are very similar. The spreads all include an article on the left side of the 2-page spread and one the right an advertisement on the whole page.  The article on the left-hand side includes the top half of the page with one-three pictures relating to the article below. For example, the edition named “Mountain Escapes” includes a photo of “Pikes Peak” to relate to the reopening of the section that was once off limits. The photo allows readers a visual of the landscape as they read the article below and intrigues readers towards wanting to read the text. The title of the article being “fresh tracks” serves to cause interest in readers. The title is general however with the scenic photo and intriguing title of something “new” is such a beautiful and isolated setting it creates a sense of exclusive content. The magazine edition named “Small Town getaways” has photos of a building, two individuals, and a group of several people. The article...
