The spread for the magazine of these 3 editions are very similar. The spreads all include an article on the left side of the 2-page spread and one the right an advertisement on the whole page. The article on the left-hand side includes the top half of the page with one-three pictures relating to the article below. For example, the edition named “Mountain Escapes” includes a photo of “Pikes Peak” to relate to the reopening of the section that was once off limits. The photo allows readers a visual of the landscape as they read the article below and intrigues readers towards wanting to read the text. The title of the article being “fresh tracks” serves to cause interest in readers. The title is general however with the scenic photo and intriguing title of something “new” is such a beautiful and isolated setting it creates a sense of exclusive content. The magazine edition named “Small Town getaways” has photos of a building, two individuals, and a group of several people. The article is related to how two individuals (ones shown in the picture) turned a drug factory into a place for meetings for non-profit organizations. The article is captioned “Flip this meth lab” the title allures readers into reading the content because a meth lab is seen as dangerous and sketchy and someone being interested “flipping” it uncommon. Therefore, the title serves to allure readers into reading the text. The edition named “Front Range Adventures" it is a slightly different format. An ad is still included in the right side of the layout and an article on the left side of the layout. However, the photo included unlike the other two editions, is on the right side of the page, large and the text is shaped around the photo. The photo is related to carbon emissions and the photo is of a man holding a bicycle. The text surrounding the photo emphasizes how carbon emissions are all around us and the importance of the bicycle the man is holding. The way in which the man is holding the bicycle is rather casual and his choice of clothing shows how the use of a bicycle can be every day and rather a simple form of transportation because of the way he is resting on the bicycle, rather than being in an awkward position next to the bicycle. He is including it as part of the shot.
For the creation of my feature spread I, first wanted to include a spread with only one article throughout the two page spread and was torn between a Colorado or California article. However, I then realized that I was replicating the format of several travel spreads I had researched and failed to put my own spin to it. As a result, I brainstormed the format of two separate mini articles on my two page spread (previous brainstorming mentioned in blog post "PTS spread and table of contents brainstorm layout" went into the construction of this formatting below) : The photos about each article will be in relation to the article below it. Therefore making each page separate articles, on the nature spot I deemed suiting for Colorado and the other for California. For the photos featured above the articles, I had taken panoramic shots and I wanted to include one in the spread. Specifically for Yosemite because of the blue hues and purple hues that I was able to cap...
