5280 Magazine Analysis

The issue of the 5082 is a scenic travel magazine that portrays Colorado's extravagant views. Various techniques are utilized on the front cover of this magazine. For starters, the background photo consistently shows mountainous shots. The shots show grassy or rocky terrain and mountains as the backdrop. Two of the three covers show a person in the shot. This can possibly allude to readers as they feel it is a welcoming site instead of an intimidating terrain , given that others have explored the same views portrayed in these shots. The shots are taken either at dawn or dusk, this may be because the sunset/sunrise highlight the beauty of the views (hues of color) and hikers tend to be early birds, making readers want to be present at the time; also, making the possible target: adventurous travelers and nature's admirers.       Furthermore, the colors in the magazine help to create a placid mood and a welcoming feeling. All the ed...

I represent "Place To Escape" magazine

PTS Table of contents

Once again, I was able to create my templates and final products with the windows application indesign. The planning of my table of contents was over the course of roughly 2 months. I included my brainstorm for my table of contents , to further elaborate on the meaning I wanted to create for my magazine.  The design of my table of contents was simple and straight to the point. I wanted to avoid a convoluted formatting for my table of contents because I find extra information unnecessary and too distracting for readers. Moreover, my target audience are fellow adventurous travelers, and from my personal experience these types of travelers aren't ones to over analyze magazines. They just want it short and sweet so they can move onto their next endeavor! So I made my table of contents straight to the point and made sure to focus the attention on the photos featured rather than the text. My general focus throughout my creative process was on the photos to portray the beautiful lands...

PTS Table of contents

The table of contents for "Place To Escape" was my last edition to the magazine's creation. With my front cover and my spread I implemented a simple house style, I also continued this theme onto table of contents. In order to catch my audiences attention I needed to have titles for my articles that allured readers to flipping onto the article page. In order to achieve this I searched for  tips  on creating successful article titles. As a result, I was able to put together titles for articles featured in "Place to Escape." Including: Enter the Golden Gates Longs peak Bolder, Colorado? Or Boulder, Colorado? Surfing Paradise Forest Kings El Capitan The Rockies Kingdom Trek of a lifetime Biking and Hiking? Let's do it City of the Stars  I drew inspiration from magazines that had a simple one page table of content spread and included photos in about half of the spread. I used this concept in my feature spread, with half of the page having photos and...

PTS feature spread content process

Choosing an article topic for the two page feature was somewhat challenging. I had minimal word count for each article, being that it was a half a page of text for one article. However, to narrow my searches down I decided to touch upon the National parks I photographed and I they can offer its visitors. But specific to my magazine, I made sure to focus on adventurous and outdoorsy activities because my target audience are adventurous travelers and nature goers. I began searching for puns and slogans for the Rocky mountain national park. I found "Rockies Empire" and instantly pictured it as my article title. However, in order not to fall into copyright issues, I created the title "The Rockies Kingdom." I took a shot on Long's peak in the park and thought of it as the "king" of the rockies so I decided to adopt this as my title for the Colorado portion of the layout. Below the "Long's peak" photo:  As for the California portion...

PTS feature spread creative process

For the creation of my feature spread I, first wanted to include a spread with only one article throughout the two page spread and was torn between a Colorado or California article. However, I then realized that I was replicating the format of several travel spreads I had researched and failed to put my own spin to it. As a result, I brainstormed the format of two separate mini articles on my two page spread (previous brainstorming mentioned in blog post "PTS spread and table of contents brainstorm layout" went into the construction of this formatting below) :   The photos about each article will be in relation to the article below it. Therefore making each page separate articles, on the nature spot I deemed suiting for Colorado and the other for California.   For the photos featured above the articles, I had taken panoramic shots and I wanted to include one in the spread. Specifically for Yosemite because of the blue hues and purple hues that I was able to cap...

Place to Escape magazine front cover layout process

For the layout of my front cover I had draw inspiration from several covers. Most of these covers have minimal text and the attention is given to the photo featured, I wanted to replicate this concept. The "AFAR" magazine for example, the main cover line is placed in the gap of the canyon. The purpose of this is to focus the front cover on the featured photo rather than the text. I also saw this concept in the "travel" magazine featuring the Greek islands and the "budget travel" magazine. Therefore, I placed the masthead, main cover line, and cover lines in accommodation to the photo so that instead of interrupting the photo, it blended with it. I did this with intentions to focus on the beauty of nature rather than the text.
